Seven More Weeks of Sunlight on Dem Candidates and Agenda

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, taking about transparency in government, once said "sunlight is the best disinfectant." I think that for the Democratic candidates, the sunlight of seven more weeks of primary battle after Hillary Clinton's big win in Ohio, along with Rhode Island and what seems to be the victory in Texas, is going to do wonders for further shedding light on the smoke and mirrors campaign of Barack Obama.

We pretty much know what we're getting with Hillary, love her or loathe her. As she herself has noted, the GOP knows her better than she knows herself, and more likely than not, every scrap of dirt that can be gathered on her has been gathered, and most of it is known, although there's always more to learn it seems, especially as to hubby Bill.

However, with Obama, there seems to be a lot below the surface of a nice smile and a good speech that no one has really investigated. With the Tony Rezko trial underway (sure to shed light on the Illinois culture of corruption which molded Obama's political formative years, if not in fact revealing some more embarrassing direct Obama connections to Rezko), issues about his campaign saying one thing to the Canadian government on NAFTA and another on the stump, and Obama's new apparent trick of ducking questions and then ending press conferences (remind anyone of Blago?), the press can smell that there is more there to reveal than they have sniffed out already--or at least, that's what they think, and they will now pursue these loose ends relentlessly.

What the press hath builteth up, they shall now teareth down. Exhibit 1: See the editorial in today's Chicago Tribune.

Meanwhile, GOP candidate John McCain has wrapped up the presidential nomination for the Republicans. That means that while the Dems continue to battle each other for the heart and souls of the liberal base of the party, which prevents either from sliding to the center, McCain is going to spend the next seven weeks rallying the GOP base and solidifying his support. President Bush is expected to endorse McCain today, and while you might say that will further annoy Dems, the ones that hate Bush already are in the Obama or Clinton camp, so there is little risk to McCain and a lot to gain from the GOP base (a fair number of whom still like Bush).

MEANWHILE, on the local front, Obama has stepped up to do a TV ad for 14th CD candidate Bill Foster, who is running against Jim Oberweis. This is no doubt a harbinger of things to come in Illinois, where Obama (win or lose) will likely endorse every Dem candidate from Dog Catcher on up. But, I wonder if Obama risks diluting his brand by endorsing everyone under the sun. He'll probably have to hire more staff just to give local Dem hopefuls the brush-off, as EVERYONE is going to want Obama to do an event for them. I think that, especially if Obama is the Dem nominee, he's going to be a bit busy to do that much on the local scene. But we'll see.

KIRK NEWS: Congressman Mark Kirk continues to be very visible in the news, speaking out most recently on the need for enforcement of a 2003 law that requires hospitals to reveal their data on infections during hospital stays. Haven't heard much out of challenger Dan Seals lately.

THE 52nd WILL BE A RACE: The Daily Herald reports that the Dems will appoint Rich Garling, a relatively new Island Lake trustee, to run against incumbent GOP representative Mark H. Beaubien Jr.

Beaubien didn't have an opponent last cycle and is pretty well-entrenched in his district. The Herald article listed property taxes, efficient roads and environmental protection among Garling's top issues. That puts Garling in the interesting position of having to run against his own party, considering the Dems have a virtual lockdown on state government and have failed miserably in each category Garling mentions. That's going to be a real fine line to walk, and one that Beaubien should be able to exploit. Not to mention, for a Republican, Beaubien has a pretty liberal voting record (but one that reflects his district). So, one wonders exactly what Garling's pitch to the district is going to be.

It's not surprising that Obama will be doing TV spots or whatever the Democrats want of him in the coming weeks and months. Will it help in the 14th or any other district? I truly believe that the VOTERS in each district know the 'real deal' when it comes to endorsements and photo-ops. Coming up with contrived things like this are seen for what they are - just partisan pandering which seldom is successful. Does anyone really think that Obama is a buddy, even knows these fellow Dems? Come on - most voters are a lot smarter and more savvy than that. And now that some well needed sunlight will be shining on our "hero" Mr. Obama, well, let's say, it's about time! In the 10th, Mr. Kirk will be running on his sterling record after 8 years in Congress.

If Obama really wanted to benefit from a photo op here in Illinois, he would be trying to get his pic taken with Kirk, not The Pup.

Sunlight on Dem Candidates and their Agendas? Hmmm...the first step is to shine the light on the elected Democrats, the next step is to give average folks (including good government Democrats) a call to action and the last step is to take our government back.

The reality is that Illinois is broken - fiscally and ethically broken and the Democrats in Springfield from Blago to Emil Jones and Mike Madigan along with every Democrat legislator who failed to stand up to these folks.

Below are some questions that have yet to be answered (or even explored) by the media.

1) Why would a U.S. Senator buy a property for a 30% discount and then bring a buyer to purchase the adjoining vacant lot for full asking price, and then purchase 10 feet of that lot for 1/6th of the asking price, leaving the remaining lot unbuildable. Is there anyone out there who would sell a portion of their own vacant lot for 1/6th the asking price and watch the value of the remaining lot go down to zero????

2) Most recently, Governor Blago is facing questions surrounding the donation of $1,000,000 to a Church (what happened to seperation of Church and State) and the subsequent THEFT of those taxpayer dollars by a school; and the promise by the Gov to give another $1,000,000 of taxpayer funds to a Church. I am sure MY CHURCH would like a million bucks for their recent renovations - where's the check Guv?

3) In 2006, the Guv and the "two tops" Dem Senate President Emil Jones and Dem House Speaker Mike "I am King" Madigan passed a State budget with NO INPUT from Republicans. That's right - NO INPUT from voters in Republican areas allowed. In that budget, they included $650 million dollars (of taxpayer funds)in "unallocated pork"! No line items indicating where the money is going and for what reason - basically just campaign cash for their "incumbency protection program".

The people of this great State have a couple of choices.

1) Vote straight Republican (your financial burden cannot be greater that it is today - and Republicans support job creation).

2) Start circulating petitions for term limits so folks like Mike Madigan and Emil Jones cannot stay in office forever, make sure their family members have government jobs, award no-bid contracts and kickbacks to friends, etc. AND IMAGINE THE SAVINGS TAXPAYERS WOULD HAVE ON PENSIONS/HEALTHCARE PERKS ALONE!! Let alone better government.

3) Storm the Capitol. That's right - Mike Madigan does not "OWN THE CAPITOL" - it is ours - of the people by the people for the people.

Let's take our government back or let our government continue to take
us. The choice is yours...

Count me in on any of the three - I have always voted Democrat but there is NO WAY i'm supporting Obama or the rest of the Democrats this year. You should have added more about Daley and Stroger.

I hope the GOP is not going soft on Link - when are the indictments coming?

Why isn't any Democrat challenging him as Chairman? Is EVERYONE afraid of Terry? What a bunch of wimps - there oughta be a "wimps for link" outing listing all the chicken &@*&s that are afraid of him!

More of the same old, same old.

Republicans: Help me out here. Kirk has voted to fund a larger federal government and to allow domestic spying in violation of the 4th amendment after that action was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. Why exactly does that apeal to you?

This isn't a knock. I honestly want to understand your rationale.

TA,

Looks like Terry "Cemetery Circulator" Link got re-elected to chair the Lake County Dems. And endorsed Seals! Will this come back to haunt the Party?

Garling against Beaubian.
Who is this newcomer challenging Mark?
Look deeper into Garling's record.

While running for McHenry County board he was firmly and decisively whipped.

While running for Island Lake Trustee on election night, the election Judge had to call the Sheriff due to harassment by Garling to fellow running mate. The judge even called the Island Lake chief of police as she suspected Garling to take a baseball bat to her car later in the evening in retribution.

Garlings latest contribution was to vote on a Island Lake text amendment that allows Municipal structures, buildings and events to be placed in any zoning district without restriction, appeal or hearings.
