NEW UPDATE 5/26/12: The Dems have announced their replacement for Cynthia Haran - Lake County Attorney Rupam Davé. According to Davé's Facebook page, she was born August of 1962, which would make her 49. Read about it here.
Original post:
Team America is hearing this afternoon that Democrat Cynthia Pruim Haran, who is running for Circuit Court Clerk against Republican (and current Chief Deputy clerk under Sally Coffelt) Keith Brin, is dropping out of the race, for reasons unknown. She has this up on her personal Facebook page, apparently.
Here is what she posted. It doesn't really explain why she's withdrawing, however:
After much thought, discussion and prayer I have decided to withdraw from the race for Clerk of the Circuit Court.
By no means was this an easy decision. But, in my heart I know it is the right decision for my family.
My husband, Michael, and I have one main goal in life- to raise 3 happy, healthy children in a difficult world. We believe the best way to do this is to step away from the very public demands of a countywide campaign.
To the family, friends and voters who supported us along the way- I thank you from the very bottom of my heart
We are lucky to have met so many wonderful people!
Senator Link and my fellow democrats, I thank you for your support during the campaign and this difficult decision process.
To my fellow candidates, on both sides of the aisle, I wish you all the best over these next few months! Many of you are dear friends and colleagues and you have my utmost respect and support!
To the voters --know that you hold the power to change Lake County-and beyond-in the palm of your hands! Execise that power--and VOTE!
Thank you all for your support and understanding.
We'll update you more as details filter in...
UPDATE 4:00 pm: The DH has its story up here. And, here is Republican nominee Keith Brin's full reaction statement:
HIGHLAND PARK, IL – Keith Brin, Republican nominee for Lake County Circuit Court Clerk, released the following statement in regards to Cynthia Pruim Haran’s withdrawal today from the race.
“I respect Cynthia’s carefully-considered decision and wish her and her family all the best as she focuses on the most important thing in each of our lives: our families. Running for office is a difficult thing, especially in a large county, and this is a reminder of the strain it puts on our loved ones. I am so thankful to my wife, Courtney, and our three children for the support and patience they have shown throughout the campaign.
We have run a strong campaign to date and will continue to focus on our efforts to modernize the office and further improve efficiency and access in order to reduce costs and improve customer service. I look forward to contrasting my ability to continue the Lake County tradition of fiscal discipline and transparency against that of whomever the Democrats slate to oppose me in the General Election.”

Wondering if this was a "behind the scenes" Dem forced the candidate out...or if this is one where the candidate legitimately made the decision...
Either way Brin should be well positioned to retain this position.
Interesting question, A. Bees. That may be answered partially by who the Dems put up to replace Haran, although if this was all according to Link's master plan, you might have thought that the 'replacement' announcement would have been coordinated with Haran's departure announcement, and it would have come from the Dem Party, not via Haran's personal Facebook page.
Is there an known reason the Dems would want to force her out?
None that I have heard. Considering that she ran against Sally last cycle, you would think any dirt would have come out, but one never knows.
Stop salivating, TA. Why is it that Lake County GO-Tea Partiers' statements are taken as Gospel and everyone else must have nefarious motives. Cynthia's got young kids and an older one just starting college. She has a great relationship with the Democratic Central Committee, and, even if they didn't want her in the race, if you think Link would muscle her out, you really, really don't know Lake County politics. Honestly, when I read some of your posts and comments, it's like you guys are attempting to describe aliens from the planet Zorbythia rather than your neighbors.
Just enjoy Brin's huge sigh of relief. Okay? At least while it lasts.
Take a deep breath, Zorby. I don't think that anyone so far here has seriously suggested there is some deep, dark secret behind Haran's decision. However, to your point about the kids, she didn't just wake up yesterday with her family. She knew full well what she was getting into, plus the fact that she ran for the same office last cycle. So, it's a bit odd that all of a sudden, this comes up.
In any case, we're well aware we will just have to wait to se what Keith wil be up against in the fall. But the odds are that the road just got a lot easier.
From purely a mechanistic standpoint, Keith's life got much easier. It takes months and months to build a county-wide organization. Keith's been at this for close to a year. Anyone new from the Democrat side will be starting from scratch. Also, name ID is a logarithmic function and, while Keith is about to hit the "hockey stick" part of the curve, anyone new will have to start out on the low-slope beginning end of the curve.
"it's like you guys are attempting to describe aliens from the planet Zorbythia rather than your neighbors"
At least the aliens are likely to understand math.
Zorbythia? Mechanistic? Logarithmic?
Didn't Cynthia have those same young kids and an older one just starting college at the time she circulated her petitions?
Wow, Louis. That's an incredibly astute observation. And while I'm sure yours and Falbe's kids are both perfect and perfectly linear in every way, the needs and demands of many normal families change. But hey, keep salivating.
Linear?
Your comments keep getting stranger and stranger.
As in following a path without deviation, Louis.
Say what you will regarding my comments. At least yours are consistent. Consistently obtuse.
Looks like a replacement has been found as reported by the Lake County News-Sun
Yes, we posted the update earlier this morning. She doesn't have much of an Internet profile, so we will be interested in learning more about her.
