Ethics Issues May Be Critical for Illinois Races

The big news this morning is, of course, that Governor Blagojevich is indeed "Public Official A" as named in the Tony Rezko indictments and other related allegations from U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. Blago has repeatedly denied being Public Official A, but in Blago's world, who knows if he was simply hoping against hope to put off judgment day (for as long as possible), or maybe he really believes he's innocent. For more on this, head over to Capitol Fax Blog, where I'm sure the discussion will be hot and heavy all day.

In any event, as the Rezko trial proceeds, there are all sorts of interesting repercussions for Illinois politicians. First off, it comes at a bad time for Barack Obama. (See Backyard Conservative for some more Obama-Rezko connections) But, Obama's problems stem not only from his association with Rezko, but also his position as junior senator from one of the most politically corrupt states (at lease by reputation) in the U.S. If Obama wins the Dem primary, you can be sure that McCain's credentials as a campaign reformer, war hero, and straight-shooter are going to be juxtaposed with Obama, who has done essentially nothing to investigate and reform Illinois politics. Heck, the man had to go to Kenya to talk about ethics reform.

On his Kenya trip, Obama urged people to reject “the insulting idea that corruption is somehow part of Kenyan culture” and “to stand up and speak out against injustices.” Substitute Illinois for Kenya, and you'd have a great speech to rail against the "business as usual" politics that Governor Bag-O-Chips promised to end, and instead only refined to a new level (or depth?).

Any ideas why Obama did not start on ethics reform in his own backyard? Well, I think you know the reasons as well as I do, and you can count on Team McCain to raise these questions.

I think Hillary really blew it by not asking this very question and making it a centerpiece of her campaign. Her ham-handed attempts to tie Obama to Rezko and raise questions about Obama's ethics (as opposed to simply his judgment) have gotten only minimal traction, because she missed the larger part of the story.

In any event, while I am personally critical of those GOPers who say a little prayer every night to Patrick Fitzgerald to indict Blago (we can't wait for Fitzgerald to be the deus ex machina for the Illinois GOP--didn't help Judy Baar Topinka, that's for sure), it'll be very interesting if Obama is a Dem presidential candidate from a state where the governor is under federal indictment. The question will be, if all that can happen under Obama's nose in Illinois, what possible good can he be at instituting "change" and watchdogging the Congress and other federal politicians?

I also think the fallout will be bad for local Illinois pols that can be easily tied to Blago, which includes folks like State Senator Terry Link and State Rep. Kathy Ryg. You can talk all you want about how the General Assembly is more or less at open war with Blago on many issues, but the man/woman in the street simply needs to hear about the mess the state is in, with the Dems in solid control of the General Assembly and all statewide offices. Add a governor under indictment, and you have a great atmosphere for a "throw the bums out" campaign message for local GOPers to campaign on all summer and into the fall election.

Isn't Daley family pal Axelrod spearheading the Obama campaign?

Obama talks a good game when the issue of ethics comes up but the goofy real estate deal for the Obama Family Home and all the spinning aside leaves one fact out there in the open that cannot be spun away:

Rezko financially assisted Obama in the purchase of the Obama family home in Chicago.

Gov. Blagojevich is official A.

Sen. Obama has snarky real estate deals with Tony Rezko.
Rep.Washington's house suddenly improves after leaving his job as a train conductor.

Dan Seals has been unemployed for three years but manages to keep a home.

Sen. Link has dead guys signing his petition, sometimes twice.

Welcome to Democrat sleaze. And they are so arrogant, they do not fear voters.

Get the state party off its ass and get them to start a where has Dan been and who has been paying him to campaign for the last 3 years.

Press releases, calls on him to release his taxes-brings up again the fact that he's a jan constituent.

This was interesting-looks like Mark's getting help and Dan's getting scared....

Democratic recruits learning rapid-response in DCCC seminar

Several of the Democrats’ leading House recruits were in Washington Tuesday for a DCCC-hosted program to teach candidates how to best respond to attacks from third-party conservative groups.

Among those attending were Dan Seals, the nominee against Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.); Darcy Burner, the likely nominee against Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.); Betsy Markey, running against Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.): and Jim Himes, running against Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.).

Third-party groups have been a nagging concern among Democratic leaders, even as the party faces a favorable political landscape over the GOP and holds a huge advantage in fundraising.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) House Democrats last December, warning the party against complacency because of the presence of well-funded 527 groups that can aid Republican candidates.

He singled out Freedom’s Watch, which poured in more than $100,000 against the Democrats’ candidate in a contested Ohio special election.

His warning appears to have taken form with this program, which also is helping candidates implement field strategies, set up grassroots organization and reach out to reporters.

Interesting article, Anon 6:05. However, it shows how uninformed Dan Seals (and I assume DCCC) is, if they really think their main concern is responding to the swift boaters. Mark Kirk is no darling of the ultra-right precisely because he does not toe the party line and exercises his moderate, independent outlook in his voting.

That being said, the right wing supports Kirk mostly because (as one prominent Lake County right-winger said to me), "We like Kirk, we just hope we will convince him to accept more of the party's principles". And, regardless of differences in ideology, Kirk is simply a great representative and even the rabid right-wingers cut him slack, even thought they are not on all fours on all issues. But, I doubt the ultra-conservative bunch will be paying for attack ads against Seals.

Once more, Seals proves he's a rookie.

Freedom's watch is a 43 donor response to the george soros wack jobs with backers who strongly support Israel and tax cuts. They will eat dan alive and Mark needs reinforcements, especially after baldemann quit causing dem money and energy to shift north.

You are reading too much Ellen, "the ultra right" you speak of like the club for growth, and the heritage foundation are not the problem. Dan and Obama's gutless support for EU style governance and weak support for Israel is.

TA,

Looks like the lefties at ONE campaign love Kirk too. Dan Seals is doomed!

http://www.one.org/blog/2008/02/26/illinois-event-isill/

"ast weekend, at an event called “International 10 for the 10th”, Congressman Mark Kirk honored 10 people in his district who have made a difference in the world.

District residents were invited to come and hear what their neighbors had done to (among other things) empower Afghan women; build clean water wells and promote education in Africa; and to help health care systems in Mexico.

ONE was also given the opportunity to let the people in the 10th Congressional District in Illinois know how they could join the fight against extreme poverty and global disease. Volunteers Ryan Steel and Dana Salmond were on hand to answer people’s questions about ONE, and Ryan took advantage of the opportunity to invite Rep. Kirk to a ONE event he is planning at Libertyville High School in April!"

Shocking that Karen May is chickening out of a debate schedule, truely schocking.

I missed the dog and pony show the political twins (Garett/May) put on this afternoon. Maybe we can get taller twin to explain her "present" vote on increasing our tax rate from 3% to 5%.

Present vote on a 66% tax rate increase, that there folks is true leadership.
