ILGOP Calls on Dan Seals to Return Campaign Contributions to New York Congressman Embroiled in Affordable Housing Ethics Scandal and Reject Offer of Future Contributions

Rangel planning August 6th fundraiser to benefit Dan Seals; $2,000 contribution received in 2006

CHICAGO -- The Illinois Republican Party today called on Democratic congressional candidate Dan Seals to return a campaign contribution from a congressman embroiled in an affordable housing ethics scandal in New York City and reject the congressman's offer to host a fundraiser for Seals in early August.

On Friday, the New York Times touched off a major ethics investigation by exposing that U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) has four rent-stabilized apartments in Harlem, one of which he uses as his campaign office, in possible violation of federal election law, state and city regulations and Congressional ethics rules.

In 2006, Rangel for Congress contributed $2,000 to Seals' campaign and just last week Roll Call reported Rangel established a joint fundraising entity to funnel more money to Seals.

"The voters deserve to know whether Dan Seals will return all contributions and reject further support from Charlie Rangel while Mr. Rangel is under investigation for violations of federal election law and House ethics rules," said ILGOP spokesman Lance Trover. "If Dan Seals really stands for change, he should publicly pledge to return Rangel's money and refuse further campaign support."

Rep. Rangel, who has a net worth of $566,000 to $1.2 million, according to Congressional disclosure records, paid a total rent of $3,894 monthly in 2007 for the four apartments at Lenox Terrace, a 1,700-unit luxury development of six towers, with doormen, that is described in real estate publications as Harlem's most prestigious address. The current market-rate rent for similar apartments in Mr. Rangel's building would total $7,465 to $8,125 a month, according to the Web site of the owner, the Olnick Organization.

On Saturday, the Times' lead editorial, "Mr. Rangel's Very Good Deal," blasted the congressman and suggested Rangel's $30,000 annual rent savings may violate congressional ethics rules.

Seals is ethically challenged. He likes Rosty, convicted, Creamer, convicted and now Rangel.

It's going to be very interesting to browse the FEC report filed by Seals tomorrow. By law it must be filed before midnight. I'm sure we're going to see other 'notables' who are sending some campaign cash to old Dan. And yes, Anon 3:08, it's clear that Seals is more than ethically challenged when he has as his mentor Robert Creamer, Rostenkowski to name just two. And we will be able to see what his expenses are coming from that campaign. Bets anyone?

This isn't going to get play in the msm so while it sounds good it won't hit the casual voter, which is where this needs to land. No one gets this or cares about Charles Rangel outside of K Street, Wall Street and Harlem. They needed to slam this as Dan's latest transgression of inexperience and inability to stay clean.

Saw Tim Stratton on the Jeff Berkowitz program online. He looks like a good candidate.

Seals already took $7,000 from Rangel!

Anon 5:40,

You are quick to criticize the State Party's release -- yet you get your political news from Jeff Berkowitz. Clearly you are watching the msm.

if giving back money removes all issues then why do you have Rezkowatch under your reccomended links?

I doubt there are many politicans out there that still have the money rezko donated to them.

Rezko gave money for favors and obviously he knew that Kirk would be corupt enough to return a (illegal?) favor for $1000

Hey Anon 8:28, I sure hope you have some proof of Mr. Kirk taking money from some corrupt person. Do you? Go where you belong, back to your buddy's blog, that vicious catwoman on the other side. Congressman Kirk has, indeed, returned money from someone well after it was documented that the person had done something wrong. Fact is, that person never was involved in anything that anything to do with federal issues, and it was well AFTER the story became public. Mr. Kirk has refused to take support from those with even a bit of doubt. Oh yes, and corrupt is spelled with two c's. Go back to school.

Anon 8:28- the Rezko dog don't hunt, at least as to Mark Kirk. Rezko generally gave a lot of politicians in Chicago a lot of money, as he wanted to be on everyone's 'list'. Most (though not all) of the people who received money from Rezko have given it back or to charities or whatever. Kirk received a Rezko contribution before it was generally known how much of a snake Rezko was, and returned it a long ago.

Barack Obama seems to have given most of the money he received from Rezko directly or from his associates, although it took him a long time to do so, and he continued to take money from Rezko and Co. long after it was becoming known how seedy Rezko was. Obama's problems with Rezko have much more to do with his other connections, such as the "boneheaded" real estate deal that Rezko was involved with Obama in buying his Chicago mansion.

Blago, on the other hand, has a whole universe of problems with Rezko that the smart people believe will eventually lead to Blago's indictment.

So, in short, if a 2000 Rezko contribution is the worst dirt you can dredge up as to Mark Kirk, you may want to start looking ahead to 2010 to find another Dem challenger, cause Seals ain't gonna bring it home.
