Washington Post Claims Lisa Madigan Will Run for Re-Election as AG; Where Does That Leave Mark Kirk? (UPDATED: KIRK IS IN FOR SENATE- ?)

An alert commentor pointed us to a new post up on the Washington Post website that cites highly-placed Democratic sources as saying that Lisa Madigan will announce today that she is running for re-election to Illinois Attorney General, which (if true) will end months of speculation (and disappoint a lot of Dem leaders, supposedly including President Barack Obama), and perhaps open the door for a U.S. Senate bid by Congressman Mark Kirk.

Crain's says there will be a Madigan press conference at 2:00 p.m. today.

Assuming this is true, I don't think we'll hear from Mark today, but I'll try to find out where things are headed...

On the other hand, the Washington Post is generally pretty reliable, but there has been so much speculation around Madigan's plans lately that everyone has an opinion, it seems, and you know what they say about opinions.

UPDATED 12:55 p.m.: Commentor FOKLAES tipped us off that Politico is announcing that Kirk is calling key supporters to tell them that he's running for Senate.

All modesty aside, TA hasn't gotten the call yet, so I am a tad reserved until I hear something more definitive.

WGN is also reporting the same story, TA, so it looks fairly reliable. This is a week of surprises all around. Lisa Madigan has lots of years to run for whatever she chooses, to be sure. Her kids are very young. She's supposed to have some kind of press meeting later today to give the details of her decision, but it looks as though this is the real deal.

I think this merely allows Kirk to prolong his and our agonies over his future. He has said that Madigan's decision to run for Senate or Governor would simplify his decision. Now that she's apparently running for neither . . . .

If Mark runs for the senate, we lose a good Congressman and probably won’t have him as our senator. The National Dems will put lots of resources into keeping the Obama seat especially if it means holding on to 60.

Now, if Mark runs for governor as an outsider—and Springfield really needs an outsider in that job right now—he likely wins and becomes an instant Presidential contender. That’s sounds like the winning ticket to me.

I disagree, Anon 10:52. Mark Kirk might be an outsider but I'm fairly sure that he would have as rough a time trying to be the Governor as he would running for the Senate seat. My hope is that he stays as the Congressman for the 10th District. Even that isn't going to give him a free ride in 2010. This is a strongly Blue State, an increasingly Blue District, so nothing is ever easy, especially for the Independent thinking and voting Mr. Kirk. Let's hope he makes his decision fairly soon and then gets out and helps himself stay as our Congressman.

He just announced on politico.

Remember in 1984 reagan won 49 states and paul simon beat charles percy here.

Doug O'Brien for Congress.

Have to say these are probably going to be the best days for north shore republicans since Porter/Rumsfeld/Percy glory days of the 1960/70s. Team it's going to be nice to be in the political sunshine for once rather than the monsoon we've been in. Bring your sunscreen. I would also urge you to contact the congressman about being his director of new media affairs. We will need to bring our bretheren across the state together.

Here are my top 5 picks for Kirks seat.

1. Doug O'Brien. Obviously a no bull guy. Well respected. Extensive campaign experience. Former HHS director, would be a governor candidate if King Louis can't get Matt Murphy over the top.

2. Reed Bundy. Great resume, enviornmentalist, which will play well with the liberal tree huggers that permeate the district. Ivy leaguer. Former kirk foreign affairs advisor. Married.

3. John Ganz, former Porter foreign affairs advisor, attorney downtown, close to mark, northwestern mba/wharton undergrad. New Trier alum.

4. Caryn Garber-just so pain in my ellen would freak.

5. Beth Coulson. A woman could do this.
