Getting Back to Political Basics In Lake County (UPDATED- BOND SUCCESSOR INFO)

This past week has been quite a whirlwind around here and on other blogs, discussing the ramifications of Congressman Mark Kirk's vote on the Climate Change bill. Leaving the politics aside for a moment, it's clear that the Internet has become a driving force for political discourse that has long eclipsed the print media. I don't know about others, but being a news hound that still reads four dailies (Trib, Herald, News-Sun and WSJ), it's typical that I've already heard about 75% of the stories that appear in my morning paper since I've kept up on the previous day's news stories online all day long. The interactive nature of the Internet, and the ability to trade opinions with bloggers, commentors, politicians, and even the reporters who wrote the story that you read in the paper, gives the exchange of ideas and political discourse an entirely new dimension.

Of course, now that we can all talk to one-another, it's also easy for things to get out of hand when some seem to lack decorum and simple politeness. I'll admit I found myself being on the short end of my temper on a few occasions over the last few days in dealing with a few commentors who (I thought unfairly) either attacked Mark Kirk or were so stoneheaded in their views that we seemed to be getting nowhere. But, I have always wanted this blog to be a place where opinions were respected as long as they were presented intelligently and respectfully, and I'm pleased to say that out of the way over 150 comments on the various posts on the Kirk issue, I only had to delete one commentor for over-the-top nastiness and trying to out another commentor. Unlike the Other 10th District Blog, I have always prided myself on not deleting folks simply for disagreeing with me or others.

So with that, let's not let the rest of the goings-on in Lake County slip past us while were are still contemplating the lasting effects of Mark Kirk's vote. There's still a bunch of other interesting stuff bubbling to the surface that it's good to take a look at.

County Board Appointments: County Board Chairwoman Suzi Schmidt has her hands full naming appointments to the three county board seats that were recently vacated, as they were held by Bob Sabonjian (who is now Mayor of Waukegan), Michael Talbett (who took a job as village administrator of Kildeer) and Pam Newton (who took a job as chief operating officer of Hawthorn Woods). Some background here.

Schmidt told the Daily Herald that appointments are imminent, although she still has a few people to talk to before making a final decision.

Now that former appointee Keith Turner is off the table for the Dem appointment to fill Sabonjian's spot, I'm not sure who will be the next Dem appointee, but I can bet it won't be anyone Dem. Chairman Terry Link approves of. I've heard a few names bandied about for the two Republican spots, but I am hopeful that Suzi is keeping in mind that these folks will be up for election in 2010, and it's important to pick people who have some chance of retaining the seat. Terry Link has made no bones about his desire to wrest control of the board from the GOP, so this decision will have some major ramifications.

"I think there's a very good possibility (of gaining the majority)," said state Sen. Terry Link, chairman of the county's Democratic Party. "We're looking at every race, and we're trying to put the best possible candidate we can in every one of those races."

And, of course, the fact that Schmidt is running for the 31st district senate seat being abandoned by Senator Michael Bond adds another dimension to this very interesting situation. You can bet that Schmidt's decision will be a campaign issue for her senate race.

Michael Bond Trying to Shake the Money Trees for Congressional Bid: TA hears that State Senator Michael Bond is being extremely aggressive in soliciting funds for his Congressional campaign to unseat 5-term Congressman Mark Kirk, or whomever the GOP opponent will be if Kirk decides to run for U.S. Senate (no update available on that either, and people seem equally divided as to whether the Climate Change vote might increase or decrease the chances of a senate bid for Kirk, although Lisa Madigan's decision on her run is also an issue). How aggressive is too aggressive? Well, let's just say that this issue will likely be the subject of some future posts.

Still No Dem Opponent for Suzi Schmidt in Sen. 31? Nominating petitions are due to be begin being circulated on Tuesday, August 4th, and are due no later than Monday, November 2nd (the first day you can file is Monday, October 26th. Thanks to Phil Collins for correcting a previous error). So far, TA has heard little about recruitment for a candidate to fill Michael Bond's shoes on the Dem side and run against Suzi Schmidt. No chance the Dems will let this go without a fight, but with Bond concentrating on his Congressional race, and possibly keeping the door open to stay home or pick an entirely different office, it has stymied the recruitment efforts of the Dems to find a top-flight candidate for this seat.

UPDATED 7/6/09 7:15 a.m.: An alert commentor clued us in to this amatuerish webpage announcing the candidacy of Laura C. Tomsky of Greyslake to run for Senator Michael Bond's current senate seat in the 31st District. A July 15 fundraiser in Mundelein is planned.

Ms. Tomsky states: "We continue to work hard, cut expenses and ask our families to do without, while lawmakers in Springfield make poorly considered decisions, participate in irresponsible spending and do little to fight rampant corruption."

Well, I guess that just abouts sums up my opinion of current Senator Bond (and Senator Terry Link as well). Wonder if she'll have party backing?

Update ends.

So, what else is going on locally? Let us know what you hear on the street.

Whew, TA, thanks for the new and very interesting post on some other relevant goings on out here in Lake County. I've heard about the possibiity of one great appointee for the County Board. Sure hope this one materializes as I think it's a great choice. We need to have folks on there who have staying power, who have shown an interest in and an ability to make some real positive gains for the future strength and stability of the County Board.
I'm hoping that all the incessant talk about Mark Kirk's future will die down this week. He will make the correct choice, I'm sure, and whatever that choice may be, those of us who are in his corner will be there to help him achieve success. Yes, I'm a Kirk loyalist and proud to be. I hope we all can enjoy this great Summer day, remember how fortunate we are to live in the greatest country on this planet. And ain't life grand.

Too bad no one listened to the repeated warnings about Toxic Turner. What an embarrassment for the local GOP to have Gray and Schmidt sucking up to that felonious clown.

Kirk was well received at our parade in Deerfield yesterday - I would say there was about 70% support for him.

We like an independent even if you may disagree with a vote or two. I talked to a lot of folks after he walked by and would say his support is now even stronger in Deerfield than in 2008 when he got 60% of the vote here vs. Seals.

Michael Bond is a total copy of Terry Link and well-hated by most of us Democrats. He lives in Grayslake -- even farther outside the district than Seals.

If Kirk runs for Senate, Garrett will crush him.

I would like to see focus on statewide politics on this blog, a breakdown of who's running for state house, and governors mansion. It's time to spend energy on laying waste to springfield rather than who is a pure enough republican.

I saw on matt murphy's facebook page, where King Louis, who knew is also on there that he has been talking to the NTRO, and other groups. Hopefully we can get brenden appel back in the game to knock out the thug schoenberg.

Hamos's seat is also open and the NTRO needs to bring an A-game to take it over some feminazi soccer mommy. Beth Coulsen used to have an aide who was related to Mark, eric something or other that would be a great candidate.

I'm leaning Matt Murphy only because Barack Dillard seems like a chump, and schillerstrom seems OLD, Proft is corrupt and always has a scowl where he looks like he just ate a dead rotting horse.

TA, you were incorrect, when you said that the last day to submit nominating petitions is Oct. 19. The first day is Oct. 26, and the last day is Nov. 2.

Are my eyes deceiving me or am I seeing a comment or suggestion about proper decorum IMMEDIATELY followed by a reference to those who are 'stoneheaded' (AKA don't agree with TA)? I'm not sure what culture or country considers stoneheaded a technical term or a term of endearment or congeniality, so I'd venture to guess that this is a unique way to call for civility (the Party of the swearing officials like Cheney and McCain calling for civility - great).

Also, who, exactly, is the 'Nazi mommy' referred to in the comments section?

I can understand a hesitance to remove comments from a blog due to concerns regarding a heavy hand (bomb, bomb, bomb and pre-emptive strikes not-withstanding) or censorship (you know, Sara Palin's approach to libraries), though to allow some references that are beyond the pale is not something that can be rationalized (even if one attends the Sanford School of rationalization, where I understand the mascot is the 'foreign soul-mate').

TA - you're off to a great start on your proper decorum tour :)

Regardless of the actions of
other bloggers (a slippery benchmark to measure one's self by), you may want to ensure that what IS within your control measures up to YOUR OWN standards.
Of course, being a Republican
-possibly- schooled in the Cheney School of moral relativism (i.e. 'We're at war, and I, er the President, can do what he wants, as the Constitution don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing'), the morals and standards change to justify the ends or vice versa. So much for a Judeo-Christian-Muslim tradition.

For the party of big ideas, superior morals, and superior faith along with a stated willingness to cooperate with others, I see no tangible evidence of any of the above.

This reminds me of the unmet Contract with America that was authored in part by Gingrich. Whatever happened to him? Oh, after his affair and GOP consternation the Repubs pushed him out of office. That's right.
This is not what most of us mean when we refer to recycling, but that's just me.

The term feminazi is one of the better vocab words in the republican party and far more ok than the words reserved for America, Israel, and freedom we read on other local blogs political blogs, which are inappropriate and hurtful to American national security.
It is a term for people that believe that despite the fact that women get more higher education than men, make more money than men, and do better than men in the recession (see Reihan Salaam in foreign policy magazine), we still need militant feminism.

As I said Team, I am ready to see the tenth turn dead red (imagine what pain in my ellen will do when her deerfield news has stories filled with politicians who end in (R-IL!!!!!), and while I enjoy the daily what side of the bed did Mark get up on and will he run, we need to realize that the only way to drain the blue (democrat) swamp (state) we are in right now is to elect too cool for school Keith Gray, fightin Tim Stratton, magnificent magnanimous matt murphy, and the next generation of republican leaders to the state house. We need to also need to focus on grooming an new generation of rockstar republican team americas, king louis, ed P. Kelly's, caryn garbers, dave froms, tolbert chisums, conservative veteran, and holt lackeys.

1. Keith Gray's only platform: he's not Terry Link (or Mr. Turner, I guess). This saves paper and ink, though not someone I'd vote for. Try harder, maybe?

2. Yea, let's turn Illinois Alan Keyes, George Ryan, George Bush, and Judy Topinka Red. There's no problem, corruption, or carpet-bagging there! ):

3. Dem's are not perfect, though to assume that just because we, the People of the State of Illinois elect candidates of one party over another will lead to 'Happy days being here again' is simplistic, is demonstrative of someone on an 8 year vacation (to have missed the glut of problems caused by dyed in the wool Republicans) and calls into question the willingness one has to truly be a considerate (can you say 'thoughtful') person who is open-minded and willing to try new things.

Even Mark Kirk claimed it was important to 'vote the person not the Party.' Was he wrong (again?) or just trying to be elected as most politicians are wont to do?

Honestly, most of the time that I've voted for a Republican, I've been disappointed (Edgar comes to mind - mediocrity only works at Wrigley Field).
Also, there have been times when decent candidates were not fully supported by the GOP faithfu; possibly due to the GOP's disdain toward moderates that don't try to tell us what faith we should be of or what healthcare procedures we can and can't pursue (individual rights to a point, I guess).

Also, I cannot remember a decent GOP candidate or office-holder since Jim Ryan was our competent, intelligent, and focused Attorney General.

A vast wasteland since then.

Thanks, Phil- you're right, I didn't read down far enough in the candidates manual. I will make that correction.

According to what was in the news paper and on the radio when Turner pulled his name for niomnation, he did so for personal and medical reasons.

The Dems keep spreading rumors that Turner was felon but they never tell any details.
He was good enough to be the Secretary of their party in Waukegan but when he went against them to back Jones and Washington and pointed out that Link is a racisit, they turned on him.

I remember the Dems spreading lies about Motley and Cunningham when they ran for Mayor and Jones and Washington when they ran for reelection.

I see a patter here intht there are never any specifics or public records to support the lies that the Dems come up with against their own.
And in the case of Turner, nobody comes forth to publuicly make the accusation.
If he's a felon, why wasn't reported in the newspaper or on the radio?

Let's be fair here.
Turner is only Toxic to Link, Couvall and Hewitt.

There is a rudimentary web-page up for Laura Tomsky who is one person making a bid for Bond's seat. Very little about her qualifications can be found other than being a campaign manager on a losing campaign.

Good sleuthing, Anon 7:07! You get an honorary Team America Cub Reporter Badge. I will do an update. And you're right, "rudimentary" really does describe the page. Although I might have said "amatuerish" as well.

I also got a facebook message about a candidate for a state rep seat in the new trier area, Patrick Keenan-Devlin. Apparently democrats have to have 2 names to appease the pc police.

If we can't beat a low level hack in comrade Jan's communist brigades in Rumsfelds district, I think it is officially time to give up.

She was suppused to be running against Willard for County Clerk.
I wonder who they'll put up for that office now?

Laura Tomsky is a website designer. Searching found this business in Grayslake ----Interactive Business Solutions - Website Design & Development. Judging from her campaign website, it's apparent she needs the Illinois Senate job.

I met Eamon Kelly at the Evanston 4th of July parade. He came to talk to the GOP contingent. He is running for the 18th District too. Charming guy. Claims to want to bring new leadership to Springfield, but then said he wold support Michael Madigan?? Apparently, he doesn't see any inconsistency with that position.

This eamon Kelly twerp was a blagoyevich appointee. If there was ever a doubt that Andy McKenna has earned a firing squad it's the fact that there are now 2 democrats running for the state rep seat in his home preccinct and 0 republicans. What's more, one, devlin is a member of comrade jan's brigades, the other is a blago appointee who ran the higher education directorate where, surprise surprise, there was a clout scandal that probably cost new trier and evanston high school kids their seats at the u of I.

Seeing as how the state party can't find its trunk from its Ellen, though I guess both these young donkey's are likely to get a free pass so they can go to springfield and raise our taxes.

Knowing McKenna, the gop will do nothing but because Mark will skirt by and win re-election against some local democrat twerp, while the party gets pummeled everything will be A-OK.
