Weekend Update: Kirk/McCain; Hamos; Coulson's Seat

Not all that much going politically on this weekend, as I contemplate one of my last sailboat races scheduled for today with 5-7 ft. waves forecasted. Yikes!

Here's what I have:

McCain Returns the Favor to Kirk: Senator and former GOP presidential nominee John McCain is coming to town to stump for Congressman Mark Kirk and his bid for U.S. Senate. There will be a gathering in Glenview on Sunday afternoon, with a fundraiser at a private home in Winnetka later that is projected to raise over half a million dollars, according to the News-Sun. Kirk was an early supporter of McCain's presidential race, and McCain was an early supporter of Kirk back in his race for Congress in 2000, so there is quite a relationship there.

Julie Hamos to Get a Piece of the 10th District: State Rep. Julie Hamos, who has announced a run for the 10th Congressional District, even though she (much like Dan Seals) doesn't live in it, got herself a little piece of the 10th District by opening up a campaign office in Northbrook on Dundee Road. Early reports a while back stated that she intended to move to the 10th, but how aggressively she's doing so is questionable. In this market, it's a fairly safe move to put your condo up for sale and have little concern it's going to move unless priced extremely aggressively; which gives Hamos plenty of time to see how she does in the primary in February.

Speaking of the Dem race for the 10th District: I've heard virtually squat out of our old friend Dan Seals. I assume he's trying to pass petitions in-between getting the kids off to school and hanging out at the gym, or whatever he does. But Hamos isn't messing around, so he better get going. Hamos is no Jay Footlik, so if Seals thinks he's going to waltz through the primary with 85% of the vote again, he's in for a shock.

Beth Coulson's replacement: TA hears that GOP leaders have a bright, fresh face in mind for Beth Coulson's seat in the 17th District, now that she's decided to run for the 10th Congressional District. If he survives vetting this week, we may hear something exciting soon.

That's what I got: what have you all heard?

I spoke with a democratic state rep candidate who was involved in seals 06 and 08 and is part of jan's machine and according to him, a lot of donors and activists are sticking with Dan despite the abandonment of springfield folks of his campaign. there seems to be the thoughts that a)dan has earned the shot b)the only way we can win the seat is beating up springfield and that's baggage dan doesn't have.

I'm sure there's a full on battle right now by Jan to get endorsements like EMILY's list and others for Julie. The state rep candidate described the backroom nastiness as "that of a civil war".

Hopefully the division will help us in the fall.

Don't sail if it's too bad out there TA, we can't afford to lose you.

Thanks, FOKLAES, we're hardy souls, but not stupid, hopefully.

There's a kirk stump speech about nearly drowning off winnetka beach or something. We could do without a blog post on ta getting rescued by the coast guard.

Maybe that'll be my cue to run for higher office ;-)

I spoke with Hamos at an event earlier this week, and she does in fact seem quite serious about moving into the district. People saying Seals has "earned" the shot to run again are ridiculous. Although I am rooting for a moderate Republican such as Kirk to keep the seat, I would much rather have an experienced legislator such as Hamos than an unemployed Seals.

I am also attending the Kirk/McCain fundraiser tomorrow night and am looking forward to seeing the enthusiasm everyone has for Kirk's campaign. This is going to be a hard fought campaign and Kirk for Senate needs all the enthusiasm it can get!

I only recently discovered this blog, job well done TA! Keep up the good work!

I understand there is a darkhorse candidate entering the 10th District race on the Republican side. Announcement to come after Labor Day. Young and energetic, who may give Coulson a run in the primary. Good network to raise money from too. Thankfully, no ties to Springfield either. Someone FOKLAES could root for. Stay tuned.

Here's what I've got. The rest of the country is finally finding out what Kirk is all about.

As the Who said, we in IL "won't get fooled again."

Anon 2:28 are you talking about Lisa Stone? She did do a series of interviews with Republican operatives a few days ago. She has not decided if she'll jump in as of today. Yes, she is well connected when it comes to raising money.
Lots of folks were asking people attending the Highland Park Art Festival to sign petitions for good old Dan Seals. Looks like he most definitely is in the running. From what I'm being told, many people were happily signing those petitions. This will be a very interesting race to the Primary on the Democrat side.

A right to bear arms bill that was passed unanimously by Illinois' Democratic Senate was signed into law by Quinn this week. Guess who voted against it in the House? None other than "Republican" Beth Coulson.

I don't think Anon 2:28 was talking about Lisa Stone from Buffalo Grove. She is a Democrat and FOKLAES has made it pretty clear he is not going to support a Democrat who runs as a Republican.

Ann T. Kirk quotes a "news article" written by Ellen Beth Gill claiming Kirk stacked his town hall meetings with supporters!

Ellen Beth Gill? LOL!

When has Ellen Beth (I hate Mark Kirk, ooooh I hate Mark Kirk, I hate him, I hate him, I hate him!) Gill written anything positive about Kirk? Ever? When has she even been remotely objective about the man she despises with a passion?

That's like looking for Rush Limbaugh to write something positive or honest about President Obama!

LOL!

The thing on candidates in this district is that because of how successful you all are, the investment you put into your kids, your connections and the effort you put into the schools, this district turns out more ceo's, doctors, lawyers, ambassadors, senior administration officials and accomplished people than 99 percent of other districts. You can't go a day in d.c. without running into a new trier grad working in a leadership office, a highland park kid working at OSD, a lake forrest girl at a top law firm or the world bank.

The standard is set high and unlike other places, you can't just walk in here with a couple million bucks and a sleazeball from florida or some b.s. about moderate politics when you requested the endorsement of a corrupt democrat governor. Like in 2000 when Andy Hochberg and Shawn Marget Donnelly and Damisch and Cox tried to put one over on us, we need candidates with their A games.

I have a candidate, he's polling, he's meeting with people in d.c., and he's pretty much mark kirk only with more national credentials including work at the red cross. And he's got the best endorsement you can have given next summers trial with Kirk and porter on the sidelines for now. We'll see.

Catwoman going national will only inspire an uptick in Americans seeking mental health treatment. This is called a 10th dems stimulus for psychiatrists.

Foklaes and Lou, thank you. I'm sitting here and laughing for the first time today. Ellen Beth Gill is pathologic, she's so fixated on Mark Kirk that she actually helps our guy rather than hurts him. Let her keep on going. That assumes, however, that they allow pens and computers in mental facilities. She's so crazed that even many in her own party want nothing to do with her. I've heard from many northshore Democrats that they consider her a total embarrassment and worse. I think what really ticks me off is when she just lies about Mark Kirk as she did with her 'report' on the Healthcare Town Hall. She was seen spitting nickels because it wasn't a knock down, drag out, hate Kirk group so she resorted to her own twisted version of what took place. She's her own joke, folks, so we just have to continue to ignore her and perhaps she'll just disappear into the woodwork at the facility.

Anonymous said...

Fokles has a candidate who worked for the Red Cross. I didn't know Clara Barton was from the 10th.

Anonymous said...

FYI, when Republicans go out of power they take jobs at top nonprofits like the Red Cross, National Endowment for Democracy-mark's a big fan, council on foreign relations ect to bide their time until their next big government job. Porter for instance sits on boards of science groups, brookings ect. If this guy gets it, you'll see in him the same understated d.c. smarts that Mark had, and he's a veteran ILGOP congressional hand.

Catwoman's rise to the national stage with huff post (TA's had the blog for viewer years and had more msm citings-HAH), we can only hope will bring her the emotional stability she so clearly has lacked and social interaction other than her feline. In my view her posts on huff post can probably be traced to a sick liberal attempt to unleash their own crazies after watching the right dominate all summer in attempt to match our energy. You know the bench has thinned for them, when she's getting national play time.

One wonders how McCain can endorse Mark Kirk in good faith when McCain said Obama was a bad choice for President because he showed "naivety" and "recklessness" for holding the same views as Kirk. Barely a year ago, Senator McCain made it a centerpiece of his campaign to bash Barack Obama for opposing the “surge” in Iraq. Mark "I support Bush on the WOT... whoops not really I just told you that to get re-elected" Kirk was in Congress at the time, and like Obama, opposed the surge and forcefully argued it would not work.

Senator McCain, if, Kirk, who claims to be an “intelligence officer,” was so wrong about something which you presented as straightforward as the surge, how could you support an opponent of the surge and expect us to have any confidence in Kirk’s judgment? Or your own? Was wrong for Obama to oppose the surge, but all right for Kirk to do so? Are you really that two-faced? If so, now you know why no one outside the Beltway trusts people like you or Kirk.

Bottom line: Senator McCain, you were right on the surge, Mark "expert on military intelligence" Kirk was egregiously wrong.

Another one of McCain’s forgotten issues?

This blog (& many of the comments by its owner & his supporters) is evidence of why the GOP is in such bad shape. You are living in some alternate universe. Oh wait, I forgot -- it's that north shore Republican bubble that believes "As long as I get mine, to hell with everyone else."

Imagine what will be said at your funeral.

Anonymous said...

PP 8:32 egads, thanks for making the "in-bad-taste" funeral comment. Someone should change the Webster's definition of the word 'progressive' ...because your claim to be one is silly, dude. And yes, the posts by goofy dems are getting monotonous.

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:40 a.m. you are so right. Sadly, because that sicko over on her blog won't let comments flow, all the nutjobs are now posting on this space. One can only hope that they find a more appropriate place to land. Today would be that day.

Speaking of funerals - how about the one Dr. "Death" Keller caused when he killed that kid. His clinic is now closed and he is looking at a criminal indictment.

Resign? Na, this is the Lake County of Sen. Terry "Dead Guys Sign My Petitions" Link. There is half a chance the kid who died will end up signing Link's petitions for Lt Gov.

I think it's wonderful that Senator McCain is coming out to support Mark Kirk so early. The end of the Campaign is still so, so far away--and we should all expect both great and stormy weather in the days ahead.

It's never too late or too early to call to get support for such an amazing Candidate.

Anonymous said...

And I should add that there's no doubt in my mind that Team Kirk have the ability to "weather any storm" the Ds may conjure up.

A bit off topic, but it was great to see--a couple of days ago--that the Senate Campaign's web site is working so that volunteers may sign up! We need to spread the word to get even more folks on board!!!

Ann T. Kirk said...

The very same John McCain who picked Sarah Palin as a running mate is endorsing Kirk.

Wow. What an impressive endorsement from a high ranking politician with such great judgment.

Anonymous said...

Ah, but you're still talking about Sarah Palin. Effective, no?

Ann T. Kirk said...

Ah, so you've thrown poor Sarah under the bus. In denial?

Anonymous said...

I'm much less interested in palin who has nothing to do with kirk than the local state rep and senate races. Dan Biss has comrade Jan written all over him, he needs to be defeated, I'd love to see the 10th become a Rwandan killing field for the careers of folks like Karen May, Garrett, Link, Schoenberg, Nekritz, and any other democrat still in this area.

If Brendan Appel is back, fightin Tim Stratton, we need to see those guys get in the game. Remember 2010 will be for us what 2006 was for Dem. If an idiot like the pup can come from nowhere and nearly beat Mark, then fightin Tim can knock off a twerp like karen.

Palin is out of politics and out of this area. Next.

Bad rationalization for a bad endorsement.

As John Adams said, "Facts are stubborn things."

McCain told us the 'fundamentals of the economy were strong' and his key economic adviser Phil Gramm told us we were 'whining' when this was later learned to be about 6 months to 1 year into a recession.

McCain also chose Ms. Palin as his VP candidate, which arguably helped him lose the election. I have to wonder if things didn't go right or if she over-charged the government for clothes and travel, if she'd quit being VP too. Fortunately, this never came to fruition.

It is also interesting that McCain is making the endorsement before all petitions for the race are due.

If you are known by those whom you associate with and advocate for, linking Kirk and McCain, to me, is not complimentary.

Short, objective, and free from name-calling or labeling.

Anonymous said...

Ann T. Kirk,

Your logic just doesn't hit home.

Who are you accusing of throwing Palin "under the bus", and how does that statement fit in with any of the discussion on this thread today?

Palin appealed to many and still has a following, so I don't understand how you can arbitrarily--and sarcastically?--state she was a bad call on McCain's part as a running mate.

10 years ago the mccain endorsement was a big deal, he was a guy loved by indies and dems and a party heavyweight. Today he's a faded politician, a bob dole circa 1999. This will mean nothing come next year save for the 500k mark got.

Alexi, whose military experience is highlighted by the GI Joes he once played with, will not be picking a fight on veterans affairs with mark.

Team America said...

FOKLAES, you crack me up. I wonder if Alexi even had any G.I. Joes, however. He seems more like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kind of guy to me.

Crazy4glf said...

I wonder if Alexi would have twittered when on active, but brief 'duty.'
I also wonder if Alexi would have used his 'Military Intelligence' service to know better than to believe the Bush Administration's incomplete or lacking evidence in going to war in Iraq (without adequate equipment and yearly generals on the ground) and/or not having a plan for after the war. This is unique as all wars - pre-emptive or truly necessary - end or wind-down.

Let's discuss the toys Bush played with: his draft card, the 'expanding the budget deficit with unnecessary tax cuts and wars' home edition, and how else can I take advantage of my family name while dissing affirmative action.

TA, it's a good call given all the time this fella has spent in sewers of chicago commerce and politics with rats, but GI JOES is more his thing. I'll stick with GI JOES because girly men like this tool generally are arrogant enough to think that because they drive BMWs they know european politics, and because they play GI JOE they know ISAF, CENTCOMM, JIATF-South, and OSD's new AFRICOMM.

Jason Roe also deserves a post, he and his wife were knee deep in some dirty stuff in our party that cost our party our majority. Without his bull in d.c. we dont have pelosi, don't have obamascare, don't have cap n'traitor and don't have a foreign policy that puts libyan terrorists and palestinians before dead Americans and Israelis.

Dick is a new candidate, with no record of service and a weak record as a volunteer by 10th GOP standards. He needs to explain why he has any credibility as a candidate for hiring this stuff that has done our party so much damage.

Funny how after the election, the MSM has decided once again that McCain is a good senator, a statesman, and not some goofy crabby out of touch old man as they portrayed him. Suddenly the MSM is listening to him again and paying attention to him again! Now the MSM is having a difficult time admitting that the man that they portrayed as a centrist dreamer filled with hope and "Yes We Can" who can work both sides of the aisle is just another big government liberal incapable of showing anything other than partisanship.

Bottom line is that McCain endorsement means something. Other than one year of MSM mistreatment, MSM has now restored McCain to the place where he belongs, a servant to this country to serves with honor, respect and thoughtfulness.

Kirk too is a servant to this country who continues to serve with honor, respect and thoughtfulness. The fact that he has not given up his military service is ridiculed by some misguided Democrats, to their shame.

What would Giannoulias tweet to the world by comparison? Perhaps that is why Democratic power brokers, including his so-called friends in the Obama White House, push and solicit others to run for U.S. Senate as a Democrat.

How disresptful and downright wrong for anyone to poke fun,and to criticize the service that Mark Kirk HAS given and continues to give in the service of our nation. Shame on you mean-spirited, nasty people. Have YOU served in defense of our nation? You don't like Mark, but you demean yourselves by saying such outrageous things about his service in the Navy. So, Crazyforgolf, I'm waiting to find out when YOU want to serve your country. I love you lefties who pick on the men and women who serve, as Mark does, in the Reserves and takes every third week-end NOT on the golf course.
