Lineup in 59th District Continues to Evolve; Might Lisa Stone Run as a Dem or Republican? Plus, Bird Flies from 10th District Race

As we first reported here a bit ago, several fresh faces are being attacted to the upcoming race for the 59th Legislative District, now that State Rep. Kathy Ryg has announced she's moving on. One of those faces we mentioned was Buffalo Grove Trustee Lisa Stone. Though I didn't want to mention it at the time, Stone had met with the House Republican Organization (HRO) about a potential run for the seat. That has now been confirmed by the Daily Herald, but the article implies that Stone has not made up her mind as to whether she might run as a Democrat or a Republican.

When we looked at Stone last, we said:

Stone is known as a feisty activist, whom Hartstein has called a "smart, independent thinker," who is "tenacious" and "relentless." Look here for Stone's village trustee website, which is pretty darn impressive for a local candidate. State Rep. Sid Mathias and County Board Member David Stolman were Stone's honorary campaign chairmen and resoundingly endorsed her candidacy for trustee. [snip]

The question, though, is whether Stone would run as a Republican or a Democrat. TA hears from a very reliable source that Stone is considering running under the GOP banner, although her voting record suggests a Dem voting history. Given the likelihood that Hartstein will get the nod from Terry Link, and has said he will run regardless, Stone would have a decent chance of having to battle her mayor in either the Dem primary or the general election, should she and Hartstein win the respective nominations of the two parties. On the other hand, maybe this would be an opening for Stone to take over as mayor of Buffalo Grove, but I don't have much of a handle on the local scene down there, so I don't really know if that's where this may be headed.

The Daily Herald didn't have much to add, except that Stone confirmed her meeting with HRO but still hasn't made up her mind on party affiliation. Wonder what David Stolman and Sid Mathias are going to do if Stone goes Dem?

Meanwhile, GOP contenders Dan Sugrue and Mohan Manian are still going full speed ahead with their campaigns and will meet in the February primary. Others are likely to follow, and people have talked about Mark Peterson (son of former State Senator Bill Peterson), and even Roger Byrne, Mayor of Vernon Hills (who was defeated by Ryg by little more than 100 votes in her first bid for the seat), but no others have officially announced.

MEANWHILE IN THE 10TH: Former Mount Prospect mayoral candidate Patricia Bird apparently has given up on the 10th District Congressional Race to success Congressman Mark Kirk, who is running for U.S. Senate. Considering she couldn't even win a local contest, no one I know took her seriously anyway, so life goes on.

Lisa Stone's behavior on the Buffalo Grove Village Board has been nothing short of batty and embarassing. I voted for her because of the Republican endorsements she received in the race. Not sure how or why she got them to begin with.

Whatever one might think about her positions, views, or causes, she has not seemed to grasp the fact that Robert's Rules of Order and standard parliamentary procedures actually have to apply to her as well.

I don't think either party will want to have anything to do with her.

I've heard the same kind of comments from others who live in the Buffalo Grove community and watch the meetings on their cable channel. I don't think it's as much as understanding Robert's Rules as it is about her self-important attitude, her feeling that she's better, smarter, more well intentioned than others on the Village Board. She might be. Who knows. But she will never win support with the type of behavior she's been showing. Maybe she just needs to understand that one gets more attention with honey than with vinegar.

Lisa Stone as a state rep? what is she going to do if a bill she introduces fails? go around to Indiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri and ask them to tell us we are wrong?

If cadigan is still out there, taking a shot at melissa bean might not be a bad idea. He gets the nomination for free and gets to run against d.c. in a better republican district than this one without all the crazies from the peoples republic of evanston going after him. Nor a catwoman going batsh-t on him.

I have no doubt obama's numbers are worse there, and if they continue to slip, bean has been a total disgrace and nobody, clearly vulnerable to the kind of wave election that is building.

It seems that the NRCC has been able to get Maria Rodriguez, the Village President of Long Grove into the race against Bean.

I do not know much about her, but as an elected official, and as a female, she might fit the bill for being a tougher opponent for Bean than her other races.

According to www.politics1.com, these Republicans are running, in the 8th Cong. District:
"John Dawson (R) - Home Builder, Ex-Crystal Lake School Board Member & Ex-Teacher
Greg Jacobs (R) - Retired Police Officer & Vietnam War Veteran
Maria Rodriguez (R) - Long Grove Village President"

the thought on cadigan is that bean is from the 10th as well, but he doesn't strike me as a guy with a machine in place to raise the dough for 2 races and is getting a late start. There's no guarantee he'll beat coulson, and it's easier to win one race than 2.

He could trash bean on spending and ethics, mark will help with a narrative on change and a new moderate direction, and that district is a lot less dem and therefore less likely to be swayed by a late obama pitch. Bean is unimpressive and mcsweeney and greenburg were nowhere near as competent as the old porter operations cadigan was a part of.

Also just because the NRCC speaks to someone doesn't mean they are going to come in with money, polling, and operatives. Their focus this cycle is deep south hick districts where the advertising is cheap, the president hated, and low hanging fruit exists.

I don't live in BG but I've read about Lisa Stone's antics at board meetings. It surprises the heck out of me that Mathias and Stohlman supported her. I can't believe that the State of National Repulicans would even consider someone like her that has no track record, has a history of democrat primary votes and an unfavorable view by residents of her community.

Let's get behind Dan Sugrue who ran against Kathy Ryg last election. He has been out working the district since she beat him and certainly deserves our support --much more so then a lisa come lately who is interested only in herself.

The NRCC talked to several candidates when they were making a recruiting swing through the midwest last month. A senior advisor to Joe Walsh talked to Congressman Kevin McCarthy (Recruitment Chair of the NRCC), and McCarthy was very warm to Walsh's potential candidacy in the 8th. Although Walsh was not available to meet McCarthy when the Congressman was in town, he's been invited to Washington once he makes an official announcement.

Walsh was born and raised in Barrington and has run for Congress once in the past. He's spent the last month meeting with voters, Republican officials, and potential donors to assess his chances in the race. He's told people close to him that if he can raise $200,000 in donation pledges by the end of September, he'll enter.

gop chief brady should sit down with cadigan, explain him to him that the party needs a tough hombre in beans seat and that it's in his better interest to run in a seat alone that is more republican with a lackluster incumbent tied to a failing administration. Porter is a top lobbyist in d.c. and can call in chits to choke off any sort of serious primary and cadigan will have 12 months between now and next labor day to build a solid machine to destroy bean who won't have much energy or support.

that would bring him to the 8th,
pollak to the 9th
and someone who wasn't a lap dog for blago or the employer of the scum that blew congress for us to the 10th.

double bonus is that mark will have people down ballot with serious organizations to work with on door knocks, phone calls and eating away at the democrats.

That would be a great lineup and give us 3 viable candidates in the area for the first time in ages.

You people baffle me. The moment that following Robert Rules of Order becomes more important than following the ideals set out in the Federalist Papers, Constitution, Second Treatise on Government, or, for that matter, the Buffalo Grove Village Constitution, then something has clearly gone askew. Calling persistence "misconduct" or "vulgarity" when it is a response to POSSIBLE, ALLEGED, mishandlings is a dangerous perspective for a democratic citizen to take. I voted for Lisa Stone in the local elections, and I sure as hell am looking forward to seeing our own State assembly open its eyes and start to think.

I think you miss a very important point: Lisa Stone is bright and she wants to make a point of getting her ideas heard. That said, in society it does make a big difference if you can get people to hear you, respect what you're saying, be respectful of others who serve on a Village Board. It's not about following Roberts Rules, it's about good old common sense. If people tune you out then you've lost the battle almost before it begins.

Stone is operating in some sort of weird parallel universe. Read the comments under today's article in the Daily Herald about her "run in" with a former trustee and you'll see exactly how people feel about her. She's a self-absorbed narcisscist who has absolutely no idea how to work collaboratively with others and is completely ignorant on even the basics of governmental procedure. She's managed to alienate everyone else on the BG Village Board and the village staff hates her because she treats them like peons. They've taken to avoiding her many phone calls and constant demands for inane things.

Not exactly the kind of person we need right now- or ever.
