Chicago Tribune Warmly Endorses Bob Dold Over Two-time Loser Dan Seals in IL-10

The Chicago Tribune has endorsed Republican nominee Bob Dold over his Democratic opponent, two-time loser Dan Seals, in the hotly-contested race to succeed five-term Congressman Mark Kirk, who is running for the U.S. Senate. Here's what the Trib had to say:

Republican Robert Dold and Democrat Dan Seals continue that tradition of strong debate. Dold is a Kenilworth businessman. He's making his first run for office, but has been active in Republican Party politics for years and was an investigative counsel for the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee. Seals is a Wilmette business consultant. He's making his third run for this office. Call this the battle of the MBAs, Seals (University of Chicago) vs. Dold (Northwestern.)

Both candidates support extending current federal income tax rates, including those paid by high-income taxpayers. That's a shift for Seals. Seals would have voted for the Democrats' health care overhaul; Dold would have voted against it. Both acknowledge that change must come to preserve the Social Security system. Seals would raise the income cap for Social Security taxes and reduce benefits for the wealthy. Dold would let those younger than 55 invest part of their Social Security taxes in conservative bond funds run by the government. The assets could be passed on to their heirs.

It's tempting to endorse Seals. We liked him each time we endorsed Mark Kirk over him. Our support this time goes to Dold. Though Democrats want to portray him as an arch-conservative, we're convinced he will be in the moderate, pro-choice, independent mold of Kirk. And Dold will take a much firmer line on out-of-control federal spending than Seals. Dold is endorsed.

Congratulations, Bob!

You see first time love I was too young
Second time I was just holding on
Third times a charm but I got burned
A three-time loser will never learn

And isn't this just the perfect way to move into the final weeks of this vicious campaign. One has to wonder if Seals hadn't been so pathetic in his attempt to portray Bob DOLD as someone he is NOT what might have happened. Too bad that wackos like Steve Sheffey tried convincing people that Bob was someone he is NOT. It backfired since the truth is always stronger than fiction. In the end, the Tribune Editorial Board saw through the shoddy and stupidily ignorant untruths peddled by Seals and his staff. The endorsement also points out that Seals is hardly a moderate. They could see through his feeble attempt to move to the center. I'm betting that Ellen and Lauren are seething in anger. Should put a damper on their festivities at their fundraiser.

Hello Congressman Dold!!!!

Seriously, guys, grow up. When was the last time any of these lame stream media outlets had any game?

All you are doing with this childish crowing is annoying people (adults) who are trying to hang on to enthusiasm for Bob despite his stabbing us in the back (abortion, 2nd amendment, etc.).

And for the record, the Dems aren't wrong about Bob's games. Most of us are well aware that we were told one thing during the primary and are seeing another play out now in the general.

So a little respectful behavior would be appropriate. I have yet to see a Dold campaign employee who looks or acts old enough to drink, much less shave.

I was a Seals supporter (and volunteer) in 06, also 08. I can't call myself a republican but now do support (and volunteer for)Dold.

The biggest reason?

It's clear to me that Seals will DO or SAY anything to get elected this time around. I can't count the number of times he stated positions at events that are 180 degrees different than they are now. I believe this man has NO scruples.

Yes, maybe I'm tired of all the political games and am voting against Seals as much as pro-Dold, but I feel at least we in the tenth have a chance with Dold.

Kudo's to thier fundraising team and congrats on the Tribune endorsement.

I have associated myself with moderate Republicans for years, those who were fiscal conservatives and social moderates, from Adeline Geo-Karis, Corrine Wood and a whole host of others over a period of nearly 30 years.

The attempt to portray Robert Dold as a "secret" conservative by the Democrats is pathetic.

I support Dold precisely because he IS a social moderate and fiscal conservative.

I'm glad the Tribune saw through that Democratic ruse. Too bad the Sun-Times was faked out by it.

Wow! Check out this Ellen tag line!

"Mark Kirk. lying sack of sXXX"

I guess that is her interpretation of intelligent political debate or discussion.

Gee Ellen! Tell us how you REALLY feel about Mark Kirk!

Someone is in need of some serious therapy or an intervention.

For some time now, I thought Ellen was losing her mond.

Now, I'm sure of it.

Lou, by now you should know without a shadow of a doubt that Ellen Beth SHRILL is fixated on Mark Kirk. From the beginning this woman has had one mission in life and that's to destroy Mark Kirk. We will never allow her to succeed. Her vicious attacks on him have made many people run away from her for just what you've so aptly stated. Not sure that therapy will help. She and her democat are most likely sitting in that broken down rocking chair seething in anger. No amount of therapy can help. It's awfully scary.

Anon 10:19: When I see her extended stalking like behavior over such an extended period of time I can only conclude one thing:

Ellen Beth Gill is desperately madly dangerously infatuated in love with Mark Steven Kirk.

Reminds me of all those movies where desperately madly dangerously infatuated in love males or females stalk the targets of their infatuation, with the end results never being nice.

Of all the actors and actresses who portrayed such characters, Glenn Close in my opinion did it best, even boiling an innocent little bunny rabbit on the kitchen stove in the process!

Is there a maniacal stalker of the year award for politics? If not we should call it the "Ellen" and award it each year! :-)

Your thoughts?

the pathetic 10th dems are crying conspiracy that the pup didn't get the bone from the tribune-even though the tribune backed bean and foster, hmmm. sour grapes from the local WINEers. Funny because they said NOTHING of this BEFORE and Dan did participate in the endorsement section.

You have to wonder what catlady does after mark wins in 3.5 weeks. She's been after him for what team america, and king louis, 7 years? I think going back to the dean primary is when she started her extremist blog, she won't be able to claim kirk blood in an election now for 6 years and you just wonder what she'll do with herself since unlike dan she is unwed and doesn't have a spouse to support her political jihad. What will lauren beth gash aka lucky mom, now entering her over the hill 50's and a political also ran for more than a decade do, now that she can't work with anti-israel groups to stalk and trash mark every minute of every day? Will their mascot aaron hussein freeman retire from his "role" with them?

things to think about indeed.

I'm trying to come out of my panic attack, Lou, in picturing what you're describing. Yes, Ms. Shrill IS way over the top in her incessant, never ending fixation on Mark Kirk. With tongue in cheek you've made an excellent point. Gash just can't get over the fact that Mark beat her in the 2000 campaign. Her cockiness, her obnoxious attitude was more reason for voters in this district to back away from her. She and Gill are quite the twosome. I agree with you that what Gill does has gone over the top in being dangerously over the top as the years have gone by. I'm not a Psychiatrist, you're not as well, but we do recognize behavior that's clearly not appropriate. Let's not get ourselves overly confident about the results of the Nov. 2 election. It's wise to remember that we live in Illinois, we are blessed with corruption on steroids. Enough said. Let's get out and work as never before to see Mark Kirk advance to the Senate and Bob Dold move into Mark's Congressional office.

We need to make sure neither Kirk or Dold has any pets at home as they may come home and find them boiling on the stove courtesy of Ellen.

OK, kids, beating on Ellen this morning has been good for few yucks, but let's try to move along to some more serious topics.

First off, the previous anon comment that was attributed to me was not, in fact, mine. But this one is...

I'm not surprised that the Trib endorsed Dold, just like 'republicans for choice', conservatives will always endorse conservatives, simple as that. Some of you are probably thinking: what about Bean and Foster?

Unlike Dan, Bean and Foster are both incumbents and have a legislative record to justify their endorsement. Dan's record, though much stronger than Dolt's, does not hold the same weight, especially b/c the Ed board of the Trib needs to try and get some races correct (Bean/Foster) to have any validity behind their endorsement.

Also, some food for thought, compare the Trib's endorsement to the Sun Times endorsement of Seals. The Trib is VERY wishy-washy about endorsing Dold, almost flat out saying they did it because they had to. In contrast, the Sun Time STRONGLY endorsed Seals, saying that Dolt "seems to fall back on the usual Republican talking points, some utterly baseless."

Though I don't discount the value of the Trib endorsement, putting the two side by side shows me that this isn't a big win for Dold as Folino wants us to believe.

Until Next Time,
A Concerned Colonial

By the way, what happened to Kelly Klopp? Was she finally fired?

Sour grapes, CC, but you are true to form. Read the last few lines of the Tribune endorsement of Bob Dold. The Editorial Board has more faith in Mr. Dold addressing the critical issues of runaway government, spending so out of control that it will take restraint never seen before. It's not wishy washy, CC, it's on point. Seals and his cronies have enraged many voters with his insane mail pieces that are so over the top false that they're pushing voters to think about Bob Dold as the only choice. Seals doesn't know our district, his staff sure doesn't, and the Tribune has told him they're not buying what he's been selling.

cc once again you show that you have the brains of a chicago public schools educated democrat (not a compliment).

In 2000, gash had an 8 year voting record in springfield, mark had no voting record as he was not an elected official. The tribune endorsed mark. Because he was the better candidate then and now. I look forward to watching team america tear apart the pup when his next ad continues his 6 year theme of not getting an endorsement from a newsoutlet but claiming one by quoting words used to describe him.
